WHY HORSES

Working with equines provides a range of benefits that transcend the riding arena.

Horses exist in the moment

and are forgiving, patient and nonjudgmental, allowing participants to make mistakes and learn from them.

Horses help participants

to increase emotional awareness and regulate their emotions.

Horses are naturally sensitive

to verbal and nonverbal cues, offering valuable feedback to participants about how they are communicating.

Horses are herd animals

who live in a social structure and seek out social relationships.

Horses are prey animals

and naturally skittish (hypervigilant), presenting an opportunity for participants to recognize and understand their fear responses.

Physical benefits of partnering

with a horse include improved muscle tone, posture, core strength, range of motion, flexibility, and balance.

HISTORY & FACILITY

Hearts & Horses has been changing lives for people with disabilities since 1997.

What began with a single horse, a handful of volunteers, and one vision – to create a space of hope and healing for those who need it most in our community – has grown beyond our founder’s wildest imaginings.

Our 23-acre ranch is nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and features a variety of state-of-the-art facilities designed to heal minds, bodies, and spirits.

“Something about being around the horses, no matter what kind of day I’m having, I just calm down. I just feel so settled, so grounded, so connected to something primitive… I just feel like I belong.” – Antoinette, Hearts & Horses for Heroes participant
