21, 2011- The new T.E.A.M.S. (Teens and Equines Achieving Mentoring Success) program
held its first class today. T.E.A.M.S. is designed for select graduates of the
Changing Leads program that works with at-risk youth to develop confidence and
social skills.
T.E.A.M.S. will allow the five participating
students to work with an instructor and a volunteer to develop skills in
evaluating, training and caring for the therapy horses at Hearts & Horses.
The program will run for the next eight weeks and will conclude on March 4,
2011 when students will do a short presentation of what they have learned.
Students will also have the unique
opportunity to work with Tem during this program. Tem, who was donated to the
facility last year, is turning three this spring and is ready to start learning
his basic training. Working with such a young horse will allow students to see
the progress they are making and how they are helping future riders at Hearts
& Horses. We are all very excited about this new
program and hope to have pictures up soon! If you are interested in attending the presentation please go to the upcoming events page.
| July 21, 2010- Thanks to the amazing generosity of The American Gypsy Horse Angel Foundation, Hearts and Horses is welcoming the newest addition to our therapy horse herd. Temple Bar known around the barn as "Tem" is a 2-year-old gelding who will be the foundation horse for the new T.E.A.M.S. program which will launch next spring. T.E.A.M.S. will take graduates from the Changing Leads program and give them the opportunity to continue improving their horse skills as they help train Tem for his career as a therapy horse. More information about the T.E.A.M.S. program will be available as it is developed and begins next spring.

29, 2009- We
are pleased and excited to announce that Hearts and Horses received the
Group Publishing 2009 Outstanding Award for service to our community!
We are very proud and appreciative of Group's belief in us and our
mission. Much of the funding will go to support our every growing
at-risk-youth program - Changing Leads. Thank you to Group Publishing
for this very generous and humbling gift. | October 15, 2009 - Introducing Changing Leads:
When a horse is on the correct lead his inside front leg is leading at the
canter or run. In order to be in perfect balance, horses need to be on
the correct lead. Often it is necessary for humans to change their lead
in order to balance the weight of stressors in their lives. Both horse
and human strive for balance, and Changing Leads can help them to
achieve this goal.
Equine Facilitated Leading is experiential learning utilizing horses to
encourage personal exploration of feelings and behaviors which can
assist in the development of: Trust, Respect, Empathy, Self Respect
& Confidence, Accountability, and Conflict Resolution.
Horses are social creatures exhibiting great beauty, power, and grace.
The horse has the ability to mirror what humans are experiencing and
feeling. Their accepting nature and their ability to give immediate
objective non-verbal feedback combine to create and ideal experiential
learning environment.
